Placement Testing
Curriculum courses at FTCC require foundational skills in reading, English and math. Unless applicants meet one of the test exemptions, the Reinforced Instruction for Student Excellence (RISE) test is required to evaluate any areas in which you need refresher help.

Reinforced Instruction for Student Excellence (RISE)
The Reinforced Instruction for Student Excellence (RISE) is used to assess a student’s English, Reading and Math readiness and identifies which course or courses best fit a student’s college skill level.
RISE Test Format
English has two tiers:
Tier One: Introduction to College Reading and Writing, Identifying Main Ideas, Discovering Implied Meaning, Interpreting Bias, Analysis through Definition, Learning Across Disciplines
Tier Two: Exploring Comparative Elements, Informed Opinions through Casual Chains, Applied Critical Analysis, Using Sources in Critical Reading and Writing
Math has three tiers:
Tier One: whole numbers; fractions and mixed numbers; decimals; ratio, proportion and rates; percent; measurement, geometry and real numbers
Tier Two: solving equations and inequalities; graphing; exponents and polynomials; concepts in statistics
Tier Three: rational expressions; radical expressions and quadratic equations; factoring; systems of equations and inequalities; and functions
The RISE assess students’ English, reading, and math college readiness skills. It is not a pass or fail test but it is important to do your best. The results will determine the appropriate level of English and math courses to enroll in at FTCC. RISE scores are valid for ten years from test date.
RISE Test Exemptions
High School Graduates
Students who have graduated from high school within 10 years and have an unweighted GPA.
Students who have taken the ACCUPLACER, ASSET, COMPASS or North Carolina’s Diagnostic Assessment and Placement (NC DAP) within ten years.
Students who have made the following minimum score on the ACT or SAT.
Prior to March 2014:
• ACT score of 20 in Reading AND Writing
• ACT score of 20 in Math
• SAT score of 500 in Critical Reading, Writing AND Math.
March 2014-March 2016:
• ACT score of 20 in Reading OR 18 in English
• ACT score of 22 in Math
• SAT score of 500 in Critical Reading, Writing and Math.
March 2016-Present:
• ACT score of 22 in Reading OR 18 in English
• ACT score of 22 in Math
• SAT score of 480 in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing AND 530 in Math
Note: ACT and SAT scores must be within ten years of test date.
ATI Test of Essential Academic Skills
ATI Testing Students
- All prospective Associate Degree Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Medical Sonography, and Practical Nursing students participating in the Health Competitive Admissions Process are required to take the ATI TEAS Exam.
- Registration and payment is only available at atitesting.com via the online store
- Students must create an account, select Register for TEAS, select Nursing for Program Type to test at an FTCC location
- Students who register for TEAS at ATI will test remotely with an approved proctor via webcam
- Students who register for TEAS at PSI will test at an approved PSI test center.
- FTCC only accepts and administers the ATI TEAS. TEAS IV and TEAS V are not comparable to the ATI TEAS. TEAS IV and TEAS V are not acceptable for the FTCC Competitive Health Admissions
Automotive Service Exam (ASE)
Auto technicians and other professionals who want to become ASE certified can take one or more of ASE’s 40+ exams. The exams are grouped into specialties such as automobiles, medium and heavy truck, truck equipment, school bus, collision repair and more. Many employers require ASE certifications. The test is offered in a computer-based format.
